Audacity 4.0 rebuilds the free audio editor around clips and saved Workspaces, on Windows, macOS, and Linux

The audio editor that has recorded and cleaned up sound since 2000 finally modernized how it works, and the price did not move.

Audacity 4.0.0 rebuilds the interface on Qt with native high-DPI rendering and a clip-based editing model: clips are selected directly, edited as a group, moved between tracks with overlapped audio replaced automatically, and cut with a dedicated splitting tool. Toolbars and panels now move, dock, float, or hide, and a saved arrangement is called a Workspace, with Modern, Classic, and Music layouts included. Projects save to a new .aup4 format that carries a preview thumbnail, recording can start anywhere on the timeline, and audacityteam.org still lists the program as free on Windows, macOS, and Linux, past 100 million downloads since 2000. The release notes are unusually candid about the cost of the rewrite: Time Tracks, MIDI tracks, the Mixer and Macro Manager, the scripting pipe, VAMP and LADSPA plugin hosting, play-at-speed, and some exporters, analyzers, and effects are not in 4.0 yet, and Sync-Lock plus the legacy tool modes are gone for good.

Keep and Ponder

The useful work is finished. Keep what is true, ponder what matters, and entrust the rest to God.

Keep

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.
John 14:27, KJV

Ponder

Release the need to replay one difficult moment.

Entrust

Christ, let your peace be stronger than the day still echoing in me. Amen.

A practice shaped by Luke 2:19Guided by the biblical witness of Mary of Nazareth.
