LibreOffice 26.8 replaces Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for free, and no part of it needs a network
An office suite that asks nothing of you: no subscription, no account, no round trip to somebody else's server.
LibreOffice 26.8 arrived on August 26 for Windows, macOS, and Linux in 120 languages, and the download page currently serves version 26.8.0 for Windows x86-64 and ARM64, Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and Linux in rpm and deb form. One download carries six programs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. The Document Foundation says the suite is released under the Mozilla Public License v2 and can be deployed without restriction by individuals, companies, schools and public administrations, and it is unusually blunt about what is absent: LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features, documents are not transmitted to remote services for processing, and no component of the suite requires network access to function. The report that carried it onto the Hacker News front page, published by Manual do Usuario, says the installer was downloaded more than a million times in one week, not counting updates through Linux distribution repositories.
