Turn on Chrome's Memory Saver and a 16 tab session drops from about 6GB of RAM to about 2GB
The browser almost everyone already has can hand back most of the memory it is quietly holding, and the switch sits three clicks deep.
MakeUseOf's Oluwademilade Afolabi, writing on September 9, opens Settings, then Performance, then Memory Saver, and picks Maximum, the most aggressive of the three modes offered alongside Moderate and Balanced. With 16 tabs open across YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, Reddit, shopping pages, and articles, he measured Chrome's memory use falling from roughly 6GB to roughly 2GB, and reports that nothing had disappeared from his tab bar. The trade is a brief reload when you click back into a sleeping tab, and he notes that heavier web applications holding a session may not restore perfectly. That is what the same settings page answers with an Always keep these sites active list, for the handful of tabs you never want paused.
