Duplicati encrypts every backup on your own machine first, so the storage provider never holds your key
The backup you keep putting off takes one evening, and this one hands the keys to nobody.
Duplicati is a free, open-source backup client that builds encrypted, incremental, compressed backups and sends them to storage you already pay for. Files are processed locally and encrypted with AES-256 before they leave the computer, so Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure, Dropbox, OneDrive, an SFTP server, a NAS, or a plain external drive receives only ciphertext. Version 2.4.0.0, released September 3, 2026, is available for Windows, macOS on Apple silicon, Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora and RedHat, and Docker. The MakeUseOf writer who covered it today tested the part most people skip: they wiped a computer and restored the files onto a different machine.
