Five Excel tools for cleaning up the spreadsheet somebody else built, starting with Go To Special
The file arrives from somebody else, and five tools already inside Excel turn it into something you can trust.
How-To Geek's Tony Phillips opens Find and Select, chooses Go To Special to surface every blank cell, and treats that as an audit step before changing anything, highlighting the gaps in yellow, filling them, then clearing the temporary formatting. Conditional formatting under Highlight Cells Rules marks the duplicates and the odd entries out without altering the data underneath. TEXTSPLIT pulls apart the cells holding three facts at once, splitting on a comma, a pipe or a space, and he checks the result and pastes it as values before deleting the original column. Only after the cleaning does he convert the range into an Excel table for filtering and rows that expand on their own, and name the constants and helper columns through Create from Selection so the formula is still readable next month.
