Hasleo Backup Suite Free puts a whole Windows system image on an external drive, and it costs nothing at home
Windows Backup and Point-in-Time Restore both leave the copy sitting on the drive they are supposed to protect.
MakeUseOf's Afam Onyimadu put the question plainly this weekend: if this SSD died tonight, where is the copy that would not die with it? Hasleo's own page describes a free-for-home-use edition with lifetime access to the core backup and restore features, covering the Windows system partitions, whole disks and partitions, individual files and folders, incremental and differential runs, scheduled tasks, AES encryption and compression levels, and a WinPE emergency disc to boot from when Windows will not, on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or later. Onyimadu's run was New Backup, then System Backup, then an external SSD as the destination, then Proceed, and it finished in 47 minutes. Two honest limits travel with it: the free edition does not clone the system disk, and an image only holds what existed the moment it ran, so recent documents still need a file backup and theft, fire or ransomware still need a copy kept somewhere else.
