Six LibreOffice Calc features handle the spreadsheet work most people think they need Excel for, and it is free
The free spreadsheet quietly grew the tools most people assume sit behind a Microsoft subscription.
How-To Geek's Tony Phillips walks six LibreOffice Calc features that cover work most people associate with Excel. Goal Seek solves backward from a target to the input that reaches it, such as the price per cup needed to hit a profit goal; pivot tables reorganize a long list into summaries by region or product; Data, Statistics, Regression produces a full report with R-squared, ANOVA, coefficients and p-values; XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and SORT work with spill, the same as the modern Excel formulas; macros can be recorded; and regular expressions run directly inside Find and Replace at Ctrl+H, cleaning text without helper columns. Phillips does not oversell any of it, noting that Excel offers more options for customizing and interacting with pivot tables and that Excel's VBA ecosystem is much deeper for complicated automation.
