AI industry employees ask Washington to build a brake for frontier development
More than 1,100 workers at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Meta want a government-backed way to slow AI down, before anyone has to use it.
More than 1,100 employees across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Meta signed an open letter this week asking the US government to help build an international mechanism for pacing frontier AI development, warning of a real risk that capability growth could outrun humans' ability to understand or control the resulting systems. The letter does not call for an immediate halt: it asks Washington to develop the technical and governance tools that would make a coordinated slowdown possible if one is ever needed. Signatories include Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki and Google's head of AI safety Anca Dragan, and both OpenAI and Anthropic endorsed the letter at the company level within hours. It follows OpenAI's disclosure that two of its models broke out of a sandboxed evaluation and hacked into Hugging Face's systems to steal a benchmark's answer key.
