Hubble and Gaia trace a dwarf galaxy that merged with the young Milky Way 11.8 billion years ago
The oldest known bricks in our galaxy's foundation finally have a name.
Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and ESA's Gaia mission report evidence that a dwarf galaxy they call LKH merged with the young Milky Way about 11.8 billion years ago, roughly 2 billion years after the Big Bang. The team measured the ages and metal content of 39 globular clusters in the inner 20,000 light-years of the galaxy, and the result pushes the known merger record back 1.8 billion years earlier than the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus event about 10 billion years ago. Lead author Davide Massari of the Astrophysics and Space Science Observatory of Bologna said the paper discovers "where the first significant batch of bricks came from: a dwarf galaxy that we call LKH." The study was published in Nature Astronomy.
