A 40-year satellite study finds Amazon carbon uptake and water loss decoupling across 64 percent of the basin
The rainforest's two great fluxes were supposed to move together. Across most of the Amazon, they no longer do.
Researchers analyzed 40 years of satellite-based estimates of gross primary production and evapotranspiration across the Amazon Basin and found the two fluxes far less tightly linked than the standard picture assumes. Weakly positive or negative correlations cover 64 percent of the basin, and the divergence is strongest in forests with high baseline water availability, where the correlation averaged -0.03. Coupling has declined since 1982, especially in intact forest, alongside rising vapor pressure deficit. The authors hypothesize that higher atmospheric demand suppresses canopy conductance and carbon uptake while raising evaporative water loss, which they warn could undermine the basin's capacity as a sustained carbon sink.
