Scripture for Reflection

“Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.”

We can hold our own hopes loosely as we read numbers this large.

Letters to the King
You wrote that the LORD is your shepherd. What is the hardest part of being led rather than leading?
From the Baker's own shelf

The hardest part, friend, is the rod. Not the staff that hooks me out of the ravine, but the rod that taps my shoulder when I have found a path I like and it happens to be the wrong one. I was a boy with a sling and a whole hillside of my own opinions, and I learned that a shepherd's hands can be gentle and unarguable at the same time. Green pastures are pleasant enough. Being made to lie down in them is another matter, for I always reckoned I could graze a little longer. Yet every time He led me somewhere I would not have chosen, I found the water still, even when I was not. Follow Him into the valley too. He is not lost, and neither are you.

– David, son of Jesse
