AMD touches a $1 trillion market value for the first time as investors widen the AI chip trade beyond Nvidia

The chip rally found a second name on Monday, and the tape followed it.

Advanced Micro Devices touched a $1 trillion market value for the first time on Monday, reaching $615.99 a share before settling at $609.65, a gain of more than 8 percent that left it just under the mark at the close. It is the fourth American chip company to reach that level, after Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron. Nvidia itself rose only 2.33 percent in the same session, a modest looking move that still added roughly $128 billion in value. Reported drivers include unusually strong demand for inference-capable CPUs and a TrendForce report that AMD has warned of price increases of about 10 percent on AI accelerators, graphics chips and chipsets from the fourth quarter.

Scripture for Reflection

“Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.”

Numbers like these move fast in both directions, so we can hold our own savings and hopes with an open hand.

A chip and a six-year plan At the Apsara conference on Tuesday, CEO Eddie Wu presented an accelerator with 216GB of memory and 1,200 GB/s of inter-chip bandwidth and set a target of more than 20GW of capacity, without saying when the chip enters production.

Scripture for Reflection

“The end of a matter is better than the beginning, and a patient spirit is better than a proud one.”

Announcements are only beginnings, and we can save our judgment, and our own promises, for what is actually finished.

Scripture for Reflection

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.”

Booms have seasons like everything else, so we can plan our own finances for the quieter months too.

Perseverance finds at least three separate water episodes in Jezero's margin

Olivine, altered three ways SuperCam readings of more than 185 bedrock targets point to carbonate-forming groundwater, lake-related silica below an ancient waterline, and later heated groundwater veins, published Monday in Communications Earth and Environment.

Scripture for Reflection

“For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

A world we will never visit still repays careful attention, and we can let it slow us down for a moment.

Einstein Probe traces a 42-light-year X-ray tail from pulsar PSR J1740+1000

The longest tail yet About 70,000 seconds of observation revealed a structure stretching roughly 42 light-years from the pulsar and aligned with ultrahigh-energy gamma rays that had no confirmed source.

Scripture for Reflection

“Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”

The sky holds far more than we can count, and we can look up with wonder rather than hurry past it.

Letters to the King
How do you know when to speak up about a wrong and when to simply let it pass in peace?
From the Baker's own shelf

I have done both, and I have done both badly, so hear me as a man still learning. When Nathan came to me with his story of a poor man's one little lamb, he did not soften a syllable of it, and I needed every word. Yet when Shimei stood on the ridge and cursed me as I walked, I let him curse; the shouting was not the wound that needed tending that day. So now I ask three questions before I open my mouth. Is this mine to carry, or am I merely offended? Will speaking serve the one who did the wrong, or only my own record? And can I say it first to a face rather than to a crowd? If the wrong falls on someone weaker, speak, and speak plainly, for silence there is not peace but cowardice wearing peace's coat. If it only bruises my pride, let it pass and sleep well; my pride has survived far worse, as the harp in the corner will tell you. And when I cannot tell which it is, I wait a night. Morning is a wonderful editor.

– David, son of Jesse
